The Publicity Go-Getter

Written by Christine Chan

Cheah Teng Teng, alumna of Limkokwing University of Creative Technology, is looking vibrant, lively and energetic. Why shouldn’t she? After all, she is currently enjoying her life as the Senior Manager of Trinity Concept Builders Sdn. Bhd., specializing in Events Management. Christine Chan tells her story..

When she is not running around organizing and planning some of the biggest events in town, Cheah Teng Teng gets herself fit by going for her weekly swimming lessons. For her there should be a balance between a hectic and healthy lifestyle, and for this gym frequenter, sports and exercise are not just about making her body sweat but also about disciplining oneself.

Apart from good health, family also plays an important role in her life. Teng Teng’s strength comes from her biggest supporters: her parents, namely her father who works as a chef in Genting Resort Hotel and her mother who always guides her and is supportive of her education and work.

The University gave me a good head-start on what to expect and face in the outside world and all the subjects learned were very practical and applicable to my work

Graduating in Business Communications, Teng Teng was one of the pioneers of Limkokwing University of Creative Technology when it was first opened in Jalan Tun Razak, Kuala Lumpur back in 1997. Majoring in Advertising and Marketing, she credits the University for contributing to her success today.

“Limkokwing University has tremendously contributed to my current working life,” said Teng Teng, “The University gave me a good head-start on what to expect and face in the outside world and all the subjects learned were very practical and applicable to my work.”

For as long as she could remember, Teng Teng has always enjoyed meeting people and conversing with others. Her interest in meeting and conversing with others is what made her join Prudential soon after graduating, where she became part of Prudential’s ‘Customer Retention Programme’, with a job scope that covered analyzing policy holders, planning of the programme and ensuring customary loyalty.

Half a year down the lane, Teng Teng decided to try out new grounds. She entered HP Malaysia’s account servicing team and within a year was promoted to Account Manager and managed HP’s overall sales.

It was only in 2008 that Teng Teng decided that she wanted to get a job that she enjoyed by doing something for herself. Without a second thought, she jumped into Trinity Concept Builders, a company that specializes in below-the-line advertising as well as events and exhibitions.

Trinity Concept Builders opened a new world for Teng Teng as she had to work with a clientele consisting of Malaysia’s biggest brands such as Nokia, Maxis, Olympus, Standard Chartered and HP. One of the major projects handled by her was the launch of HP’s latest consumer notebook at Pavilion in August 2008.

Adding to her portfolio, Teng Teng has also organized and executed the marketing and promotion of Avril Lavigne’s 2008 concert under Maxis. Although her job sounds exciting, it also takes up a lot of her energy.

Being in the events line is really exciting and interesting as every project is something and it challenges you mentally and physically. Passion is what drives you, giving you the energy to take on anything and everything

“Working in the events line can be tiring at times. You need to be prepared to give your weekends up as you have to be on-site during events and exhibitions,” she said.

“However, being in the events line is really exciting and interesting as every project is something and it challenges you mentally and physically. Passion is what drives you, giving you the energy to take on anything and everything,” said Teng Teng, who is the eldest sibling of three.

Teng Teng has her own goals for Trinity Concept Builders. She wishes to turn the company into a full-fledged advertising agency and take in above-the-line projects in the near future. Despite the positivity, she is concerned about the economic turmoil.

“The advantage for us is that companies will be spending more money on promoting, and below-the-line advertising will be opted to save costs and balance the budget, which means that companies such as mine will only feel the pinch later, if at all.”

She also added that Malaysia’s economy will not look too good if negative articles are continuously being circulated in the press as it will only create a chain reaction. Malaysians will need to be more cautious of their spending, and she suggests that there be less circulation on negativity so that people do not over-react.

Running some of the city’s major events and exhibitions is challenging work, but Teng Teng has proven that she can keep it all together, balancing both work and relaxation. We wish her the best in taking Trinity Concept Builders on to the next level.
