Limkokwing Sound and Music Design Academy and the Fashion Community students debuted their first collaboration by organising a musical concert on 12 April 2018 at the University’s Hall of Fame.

Themed ‘Everybody wants to rule the World,’ the concert featured a string of performances that showcased famous pop, metal and alternative hits form the 80’s.

Songs by legendary artists such as Michael Jackson, Twisted Sister, The Bee Gees, Toto, Madonna, Lionel Richie and Rick Astley to mention a few, were covered during the event.

In conjunction with the live performances, there was fashion show which displayed the decade’s hottest trends.

Carmen Ten Kar Man, who is studying for a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Recording Arts, said the event was part of their assignment.

Its objective was to familiarise students with planning an event from start to finish and learn how to perform on stage.

“We got inspiration from the Victoria Secret fashion show, were they do it together with band performances, and so we thought it would a good idea to collaborate with the fashion community as they already conduct fashion shows on campus every Thursday.”

“Having activities like this on campus mainly help us develop our talents, from planning, to stepping out of our comfort zone, and to become confident in displaying out talents.”

Carmen chose to study recording arts at Limkokwing because of its top-notch facilities and lecturers, as well as its multicultural environment.

“There are a lot of people that I never would have met if I didn’t come to Limkokwing University,” she concluded.

As part of the Fashion Community, Heidi Mohd Rafique, who is studying for a Bachelor of Arts in Event Management, said, “We wanted to create a space where students can come together display their skills and share the love for this iconic generation of rock music.”

On why she thinks such events are beneficial to developing students’ skills, Heidi said, “I definitely think that it’s one thing to read about these things and see them on the slides in class but it’s a whole other experience to really take it into your own hands and doing it yourself.”

Chiming in, Bachelor of Arts in Professional Communications student Aysa Maria Mohamad Yusuf said other faculties had collaborated for special projects in the past, which contributed to building students’ skills.

“Above all, the collaboration between Sound and Music Design Academy and the Fashion Community was a practical decision,” said Aysa.

In commending students for putting together an amazing event, Limkokwing Vice President of Brand Creativity and Talent Development, Dato’ Tiffanee Marie Lim, said she had welcomed them to perform at the upcoming annual Limkokwing Cultural Festival that is scheduled to be held on 10 May 2018.

“We are inviting every single performer tonight to join us at the cultural festival, the band especially because you deserve to be on that stage.  You give this University life; the talent that you possess is unmatched, we love you for it, thank you so much for inspiring us,” Dato Tiffanee said.
