Limkokwing University held a conference for school principals and student counsellors on the 4th December. The conference, which was held at the University’s Cyberjaya campus, was attended by Deputy Minister of Education, YB Minister P Kamalanathan; Founder and President of Limkokwing University, Tan Sri Lim Kok Wing; school principals and student counsellors from all over Malaysia.
Limkokwing University held a conference for school principals and student counsellors on the 4th December. The conference, which was held at the University’s Cyberjaya campus, was attended by Deputy Minister of Education, YB Minister P Kamalanathan; Founder and President of Limkokwing University, Tan Sri Lim Kok Wing; school principals and student counsellors from all over Malaysia.
The conference was created as a platform to facilitate dialogue and exchange of ideas on the future of education and empowerment for students of the next Malaysian generation. It is in line with the Malaysia Education Blueprint 2013-2025, which seeks a more holistic and comprehensive approach to transform the education system, and bridge gaps in the academic achievements of urban and rural pupils.
Speaking at the conference, YB Minister P Kamalanathan said it was only fitting that Limkokwing University be at the forefront of developing Malaysian education, commending the University for being recognized as Malaysia’s ‘University of Innovation’ in 2012, and Malaysia’s ‘University of Transformation’ in July this year, by the Malaysian government.
He also applauded the University’s diverse international environment, with students from over 160 countries on campus. He said the University was “globalizing Malaysian education in a manner unmatched by any other institution of higher education in Malaysia.”
“What better exposure to the world can a student receive than being here in this campus, with students from diverse backgrounds.”
He went on to say it was upon the teachers and principals to establish a strong foundation for students in order for them to excel when they reach university level, and graduate as industry ready young adults.
“Before these young people even get to university, it is the responsibility of principals and teachers like you, to lay the ground work for them to excel.”
During the conference, the various speakers discussed the state of education today, future challenges, and how the educators can prepare themselves and the students for the changes.
They also talked about today’s web generation, and how it can be best utilised to benefit the students. Speaking at the event, Limkokwing University Founder and President, Tan Sri Lim Kok Wing said Malaysia needs to keep up with technology and new development to be able to compete internationally.
“We have arrived at a stage where we must change,” he said.
He said the country depends on the teachers and principals to create a capable human capital that will build the country and ensure a prosperous economy.
“We depend on you to make sure that they are not only well educated, but also skilled for the future, the future of the country is in your hands,” he continued.
One of the attendants, Mary Ann Louis, Senior Assistant of Student Affairs at Damansara Jaya Secondary School, agreed that indeed they, as teachers and counsellors were at the frontline of shaping not only the young people’s future, but the future of the country as well.
“To empower students for the future, we need to be creative ourselves as educators,” she said.
Another attendant, Sadiah Mashidi, Principal of Lembah Bidong Secondary School said the conference has introduced her to a broader perspective on empowering students for the future.
“We need to transform our approach to education, and introduce the latest technology in schools if we are to produce students capable of developing the country’s economy,” she said.
Limkokwing University has always been at the forefront of creative education, providing an engaging and practical, industry-based way of learning to students, which ensures that graduates are industry-ready and competent. Over the years, the university has championed creativity and innovation for human capital development. It continues to work closely with the Prime Minister and other ministries and agencies in support of the transformation agenda.
The conference was yet another example of government and private sector collaboration to move the economy to high income level through innovative and transformational leadership. It is a roadmap to transformation of Malaysian education, which acts as a platform for creating an effective and enriching experience for students.
