Misa Gala Dinner & National Media Awards Held at Ditshupo Hall

The annual Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) National Media awards took place on Friday 1st November 2013 from 7PM until 10Pm at Ditshupo hall.

The annual Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) National Media awards took place on Friday 1st November 2013 from 7PM until 10Pm at Ditshupo hall. The awards are meant to celebrate the media captains, who deserve the reward of their goal to keep the nation well informed, educated and entertained, were themed “Freedom of Expression and access to information.

The event intended to recognize the work of deserving practitioners, both at the national and regional level saw many from the media fraternity coming to celebrate the media captains.

Amongst the speakers on the night was Clara Olsen, the founding chairperson of MISA Botswana, who said she believes they have extended the scope of freedom of speech, provided the public with a forum to discuss issues of national importance, promoted transparency in government and good governance, exposed corruption where it existed and informed the nation on economic, political and social issues.

MISA Botswana Chairperson Mr Modise Maphanyane, who has worked as an executive for MISA Botswana chapter before welcomed the guests to this auspicious event. The event also had musical performances to keep the crowd entertained between the speeches that were given. The performers included a local artist Helen as well as Limkokwing University student Sharon, who is well known in the country as last year’s MyStar music competition winner.

The Guest of Honour at the event was Ambassador Legwaila Joseph Legwaila who addressed the guests and was handed a token of appreciation by Itumeleng Ramsden who serves in the MISA Botswana National Governing Council.

Limkokwing students made the University proud, winning several awards in different categories. Layani Ellias, a Limkokwing student based in Radio Botswana, won the Best Reporter on Education Issues (Broadcast), while Itumeleng Mfila, from the Guardian Newspaper took home the Children’s Reporting Award (Print).

Our alumnae, Keneilwe Lephoi, working in eBotswana won the Best Broadcast Journalist of the Year, It was a humbling moment when they each went on stage to receive their awards, giving praise to the University, which they said played a pivotal role in moulding them into young award winning professionals even before they graduated. Their speeches were received with a standing ovation and much cheer.

The event ended a photo opportunity moment for the winners and the guests, followed by lively performances by Helen and the well renowned Johnny Mokhali.
