The campaign was intended to unite and took a reconciliatory stance (which some ANC supporters criticized as too soft). The campaign slogan ‘A better life for all’ was used with a photo of a smiling Nelson Mandela and children of different ethnicities.

His intense popularity turned to be a ‘problem’ for the campaign since people would tear the posters and take them home as souvenirs. For decades, photos of Nelson Mandela were banned by the apartheid government and the campaign posters finally gave the people opportunity to see how he looked like after life from prison.
