“Everything has a story” – Hassan Abd. Muthalib

1 May 2018

Director of Malaysia’s first-ever animated feature film (the Sang Kancil series and Silat Legenda), Hassan Abd. Muthalib recently shared his valuable insight on film and film-making with Limkokwing students on 23 April 2018.

Among his greatest achievements are official recognition as Father of Malaysian Animation, and Animation Pioneer by Singapore’s Nanyang Technological University.

Hassan was the keynote speaker during the session organized by one of Malaysia’s biggest eyewear chain stores, Metro Optical Group (MOG), in conjunction with the company’s upcoming Short Film Competition, in support of eye awareness.

“It is a good initiative, especially involving students as I believe students these days are very creative and they have an eye for solid content,” Hassan said.

Former Limkokwing lecturer

Having been a lecturer at Limkokwing University in the past, he said the University is very well-known for its diversity.

He believes the talented students from this campus would do really well in the Short Film Competition.

“My first batch of students have all succeeded well in their careers, and some of them even own production companies and animation studios,” said Hassan proudly.

Everything has a story

He said that everything in this world has a story, and we as the people, must tell the story.

“To be able to tell a story, we need to be good observers,” said Hassan at the interview.

He also mentioned that a movie with absolutely no dialogues can go anywhere around the world.

“When there’s no dialogues, it is always a plus because anyone can watch it, but a good story must come along,” he added.

The submission deadline for the competition is 20 June 2018, with cash prizes worth up to RM 17,000.
