Limkokwing’s kind gesture for Pakistan

12 October 2010, by Kohilam Kalimuthu

With an estimated 24 million people in Pakistan affected by torrential rains and flooding that followed, the United Nations has deemed the natural disaster as the worst ever in recent years. It has claimed over 2,000 dead and millions made homeless since August.

In its third installment, the Limkokwing Heal the World Charity campaign rallied over 150 nationalities that came together to make the night a musical harmony of sound a memorable event worthy of its purpose – to raise funds to help the people of Pakistan.

Through the Heal the World campaign, a Limkokwing University initiative, students created awareness and raised funds for the victims with a month-long preparation that included bazaars selling Pakistani items of interest, and finally the much-anticipated musical concert.

The concert was a time to unite in spirit, show support and offer sympathy to those suffering with students of various nationalities joining together from all around Malaysia to raise funds to ease the suffering of the people affected by the floods.

All the efforts put in by Limkokwing international students to raise funds paid off well when a staggering RM50,000 was collected all of which will go directly to the Pakistan Embassy for the purchase of much-needed medical supplies.

Minister and Acting High Commissioner of Pakistan to Malaysia Dr. Imtiaz A. Kazi, was filled with gratitude and appreciation for all the hard work put in by the students to help the needy.

“We are the world. We heal the world and that power is within ourselves. I’m very impressed by this motto that Limkokwing University has adopted and very much appreciate their gesture. They have done it for the Palestinians, they did it for the people of Haiti and now they are doing it for Pakistan.”

His Excellency Manuel Guzman, Ambassador of Venezuela and Mr Abu Hirzan Mustapha, Assistant Secretary, South and Central Asia Division Ministry of Foreign Affairs Malaysia were also in attendance at the event and showed their support for the students’ hard work.

Songs performed were expressed through all genres and languages, reflecting the common emotions felt throughout the Limkokwing network, featuring students from countries such as Belgium, China, Mauritius and Lithuania to name but a few.

Pakistani student Shameer Ansari, a Limkokwing student studying International Business, expressed his heartfelt gratitude for those who contributed throughout the campaign.

“For over a month, the Pakistani community hand in hand with student ambassadors and student volunteers have strove together to organise this Heal the World campaign to aid the victims of the Pakistan floods. We are united by the belief that if we band together we can make a difference in the lives of those suffering.”

The boundless energy projected by students could be seen through every single performance they did, for it was all for the cause in helping the people of Pakistan with hopes of sending footage to those in Pakistan so they can see how strongly people around the world feel about their struggle.

Limkokwing Vice President of Special Events Dato’ Fajura Juffa gave her message of hope and determination the students at the University show on a daily basis.

“This group of young leaders from all over the world has worked hard for the past several weeks. To the students who have put endless time and effort, we at Limkokwing wish to convey our admiration for your efforts. What is true, you have proven to us, that learning and responding to the situations around us is part of the practical learning experience we promote here on this campus.”

Heal the World concert also brought together students from MMU, APIT, KDU, Raffles and Taylors who with Limkowking students chipped in to deliver a powerful message of peace, hope and goodwill to the people of Pakistan and to the world.

As Pakistani student Navaal Irfan from the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment put it rather poignantly.

“I am so proud of our peers at Limkokwing for being sensitive enough to feel for our brothers and sisters in Pakistan. It’s very emotional for me to be here and feel so close to something that’s happening in my home country so far away.”
