On Friday, 13 October 2023, the main campus of Limkokwing University in Cyberjaya experienced a unique confluence of Canadian and Malaysian academia. The occasion? The grand opening ceremony of the Hanson College Representative Office symbolises a deepening bond between Hanson College, Cambrian College, and Limkokwing University.

This milestone event saw the presence of distinguished representatives from both Canadian institutions. From Hanson College, attendees included its Founder, Fuhan Zhang; Chairman, Dong Liu; President and CEO, Shouyi Ma; COO, Andrew Kennedy; CFO, Avery Haw; and VP of Enrolment and Admissions, Hardeep Kaur. Representing Cambrian College were President Kristine Morrisey; Interim VP of Finance, International, and Research, Meghan Roy; and Director of Cambrian International, Imad Al-Sukkari. They all came together with a shared vision: fostering international collaboration and enriching student experience.

Fuhan Zhang, the resilient founder of Hanson Canada, mirrored the spirit of both institutions when he said, “Both of us face uphill challenges every step of our journey.” He emphasised the shared ethos between Hanson Canada and Limkokwing University, noting that both are private universities with Chinese founders who expanded their educational visions beyond borders.

Zhang’s optimism about the collaboration was palpable as he said, “With strong communications between both partners, we can share our experiences and learn from each other.” He hopes the collaboration will be a milestone that spurs both institutes towards greater achievements.

Kristine Morrisey, President of Cambrian College, echoed Zhang’s sentiments from a slightly different vantage point. She underscored the aligned values of academic excellence, innovation, and creativity shared between the institutions. Morrisey was especially excited about the potential academic collaborations, highlighting the creative art and design programmes at Cambrian College. She said, “We have animation, game design, graphic arts. There’s a lot of opportunity for us to work together and look at how our students, both from Malaysia and Canada, can experience each other’s cultures and institutions.”

Morrisey’s enthusiasm was not just limited to academic pursuits. She emphasised the importance of cultural exchange, mentioning how invaluable it is for students to experience global markets firsthand. She envisions students from both institutions benefitting from semester-abroad programmes and short-stay experiences.

Morrisey concluded by touching upon the significance of the representative office. She said, “I think it just speaks volumes really and sets the stage for how serious we are to want to engage and work with your institution.” The long-standing successful partnership of almost 20 years between Hanson College and Cambrian College gives Morrisey confidence that this three-way collaboration will enrich student experiences.
