Eleven students and four faculty members from Limkokwing University's Faculty of Multimedia Creativity recently had the opportunity to tour Astro HQ at their Bukit Jalil broadcast complex.

Astro is one of the leading integrated consumer media entertainment group in Malaysia and Asia that operates four key areas of business, namely Satellite Pay TV, Radio, Publication and Digital Media.

The visit on the 19th of September was to enable the students to experience the back operations of a TV station and learn first-hand how the programmes (movies, dramas, documentary) were made and broadcast.  Faculty of Multimedia Creativity Programme Leader Kelvin Chong said the visit to Astro was the University’s way of imparting real industry knowledge to the students. “The objective is for the students to learn from the leading TV content provider in Asia about the issues that they have and how they tackle them”.

The majority of the participants in this visit are final year students who are planning to do their final project in short films or motion graphics, thus this visit was a great chance for them to learn all the intricacies and difficulties involved, especially during the production stage.

During the visit, the students were given industry talk on how to develop their careers and the different types of jobs and paths they could pursue, including talk about internship and graduate programmes at Astro.

The students learned how Astro manages contents coming from all around the world and how best to present them to the audience. They were also given insight into how Astro brainstormed and resolved all the issues about their new and revamped ‘Astro on the Go’ mobile app.

The students were then treated to a behind-the-scenes tour of the broadcast complex, which include visit to the control rooms, sound stages and studios, where they were encouraged to interact with the staff and hosts, watch a live radio show featuring Jinny Boy and Ian from Hitz FM and participated in the launching of The Voice Asia reality TV show.

When asked about the outcome of the visit, Kelvin Chong said, “It has been a fruitful visit. We hope the students will be able to get a lot of insight on how Astro works and also the opportunities that Astro provides to students.”
