Rebecca Anjuman Dhunputh believes that understanding the various design principles and space concepts in Bachelor of Arts in Interior Architecture facilitates meeting clients’ expectations while fostering greater relationship between clients, architects and project managers.
According to her, keeping an open mind encourages creativity while developing new ideas and solutions to meet any demand by various clientele.
Design, Practicality and Functionality
She explained that practicality and functionality are essential in establishing a career in interior architecture.
“We emphasise functionality in our designs to create practical living spaces,” she said. “Even if a design may appear attractive and interesting, it may not be practical.”
“This is why our classes are focused on the importance of understanding the relationship between architecture, interiors, engineering and project management,” she added.
During her Project Management studies, she learned to plan and design spaces for business offices, commercial spaces and living environments.
This experience also provided her with exposure that enabled her to meet industry professionals and interior design veterans.
Incorporating Different Elements
Her studies incorporate Architecture Culture & History, Building Science and Environmental Psychology.
“The University makes sure that we are conscious about what we are learning,” she added.
“You have to be open-minded to accept new ideas and express yourself,” she said while highlighting the importance of public speaking and presentation.
Establishing Industry Contacts
She also added that site visits and workshops conducted by the University’s lecturers offer greater insights in the Interior Design profession.
“In this industry, you will need to know people as well,” she said. “You need to know the right contacts if you want to succeed.”
“When you have your contacts and develop your own networks, you can establish yourself internationally.”
Development Opportunities
The University gave her the chance to pursue her degree while developing her communication skills and networking opportunities.
Rebecca also added that her participation in the University’s campus activities has taught her to organise events, cultural shows and exhibitions. She has been involved with several events at the University such as culture festivals, Independence Day celebrations and fashion shows.
