Trailblazing 2D Animation with Inspidea

Inspidea is a Malaysian pioneer in exporting original digital animation globally, with an impressive client list that includes Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon, Animax, AXN, and Disney.

2D digital animation is what Inspidea excels at, with the sole focus of creating fun entertainment to inspire the world to dream differently.

The company first started off in 2002, with two unlikely people crafting the whole idea behind this animation studio.

One was an amazing ‘right-brainer’ named Andrew Ooi, while the other was an extraordinary ‘left-brainer’, CJ See.

Today, CJ is the Sales and Marketing Director while Andrews serves as Managing Director.

Andrew led an insightful industry talk at the Cyberjaya campus on 27 March 2018.

How it all began

During the Asian Financial Crisis in 1998, Andrew and CJ started a software distribution and systems integration company called Tourific.

In 2002, the duo saw an opportunity in a locally-produced educational animation series, which led to the launch of Inspidea.

Building a company from a four-person team to 380 artists and designers, Inspidea is slowly becoming one of the largest creative studios in South East Asia.

Inspidea, being a 100% export company that is continuously building rapport with A-list international clients, is steadily becoming the go-to animation studio in South East Asia for international studios and broadcasters that need high-end 2D animation.

Major breakthrough

Inspidea’s first major breakthrough was in 2004, when “Johan The Young Scientist” was released, a 2D animated series created with fun and vibrant ideas to stimulate the minds of children, aged from 4-8 in developing a love for science.

Their very first production was self-funded, but unfortunately was not successful in Malaysia.

Undeterred, they brought the title to MIPCOM, an annual trade show held in the French town of Cannes, which led to 28 international networks picking up the show, which has since been aired in more than 33 countries.

As of today, Inspidea is poised in both original IP creation as well as contract servicing work for major studios all over the world, even earning a British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) nomination.
