Limkokwing University’s Indian Cultural Club (ICC) students created a 5m x 5m ‘Kolam’ entirely from 75kg of coloured rice at the Plaza to celebrate Deepavali from 1 November till 3 November.

Deepavali (or Diwali), also known as the ‘Festival of Lights’, signifies the triumph of light over darkness and is celebrated by Hindus from all around the world.

The three-day event featured a Deepavali Bazaar and a showcase of Indian culture through arts, crafts, performances, a flash mob, games and many other exciting activities.

Decorated with flowers and grand displays of Indian God idols, Lord Ganesha and Lord Muruga, the bazaar sold Deepavali delights such as food, sweets, crafts, clothing and ornaments from different parts of India.

Students got a delightful taste of Deepavali as they joined numerous games organised by ICC students such as the ‘saree’-tying and ‘kolam’-drawing activities.

The henna booth was the highlight of the bazaar and attracted many international students.

Suzana Hirul from Philippines (Bachelor of Arts in Creative Multimedia) was fascinated by her henna and felt that Deepavali is a colourful and joyous festival.

“I have a lot of Indian friends and I really love being able to experience Deepavali in such a wonderful way,” she exclaimed.

Vice President of ICC, Sri Ram Ganesan, a Digital Media student from Malaysia said that ICC organised the event in order to showcase finest aspects of Indian culture to students from other regions of the world.

“It’s important to hold festivals and celebrations like Deepavali to bring all Limkokwing students together and help bridge the cultural gap,” he added.

Limkokwing students often celebrate their festivals and national days at the Plaza with their fellow friends from different parts of the world. The University provides students with the opportunity to ‘feel at home’ while being away from their family and friends.
