The United States of America is a country in North America consisting of 50 states. It borders the North Atlantic Ocean and the North Pacific Ocean as well as Canada and Mexico. Hawaii and Alaska extend the nation into the Pacific Ocean.
The country has been sustained by its successes in World Wars I and II, and has since remained the world’s most powerful nation state.
Its major Atlantic Coast cities are New York, a global finance and culture centre, and capital Washington, DC. Midwest metropolis Chicago is known for influential architecture and on the west coast, Los Angeles’ Hollywood is most famous for filmmaking.
Other major cities are Houston, Philadelphia, Phoenix, San Antonio, San Diego, Dallas and San Jose.
The USA is one of the world’s most ethnically diverse and multicultural nations. It is the third most populous nation in the world after China and India, with an estimated population of 326,625,791 people.
The United States Census officially recognises six racial categories: White American, Black or African American, Native American and Alaska Native, Asian American, Native Hawaiian and other Pacific Islander.
White Americans are the racial majority and make about 79% of the population. African Americans are the largest racial minority amounting to 13%, Hispanic and Latino Americans amount to 17% of the population, making up the largest ethnic minority.
Since the end of World War II, the country’s economy has achieved a moderately steady growth, low unemployment and inflation, and rapid advances in technology.
The USA has the world’s largest economy by nominal GDP and second-largest economy by PPP. Even though the country’s economy is considered post-industrial, its manufacturing sector remains the second largest in the world. It also has world’s leading economic and military power, and is a leader in scientific research and technological innovations.
