Sam Esna: At the forefront of tackling the rise of Cybersecurity threats

11 June 2022

At only 28 years old Sam, a Limkokwing alumnus from the Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Business Information Technology programme works as a Cyber Security Consultant at PWC – one of the biggest companies leading professional services networks worldwide.

With Covid-19 forcing organisations to accelerate their digital transformation, cybersecurity is increasingly becoming a major concern. According to research made by Purplesec, Cybercrime was up by 600% in 2021 were there was a rise of in sophisticated phishing email schemes, malware, ransomware and cryptojacking.

As a Cybersecurity Consultant Sam’s passion takes us through what his job entails and why it’s a pertinent area of focus in the covid era.

Kindly take us through when you first discovered passion for your work?

“I was really into cybersecurity as a teenager, especially the hacking part which back then I thought hackers in the real world are the same as hackers in the movies! But then a couple of my friends’ devices got hacked and caused them some serious problems. I helped them with the basic knowledge I had and that was when I realised I’d want to do this forever.”

What is your company’s vision and mission and how has it contributed to your country and community?

“Building trust in society and solving important problems. Being a one of the big four ‘’ PWC is among the leading professional services networks in the world that helps organisations and individuals create the value they are looking for, by delivering quality in Assurance, Tax and Advisory services.

“Today, COVID-19 pandemic is continuing to affect people, business and societies around the world. There’s a growing realisation that we will not be returning to the old normal. We have the opportunity to choose a new normal where economic and social progress are aligned.  PWC is creating a common purpose that will help to steer business through the next stage of evolution, as systems upon which economies and societies depend on are disrupted. Currently all projects I’m undertaking are so exciting because the good thing about working in cyber security is that everyday something unexpected happens and you have to solve that puzzle which makes it way more exciting.”

Share with us your journey studying at Limkokwing and how what you studied influenced/assisted what you are doing today:

“I obtained a Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Business Information Technology which was an amazing major about how to combine the business world and the IT world – this helped me become more efficient in both fields. One thing I am sure about is at Limkokwing University learning is made fun which I believed helped me a lot not to get bored with just studying 24/7.”
